The Workday Problem: Why It Scrambles Your Resume
If you've applied to jobs at Salesforce, Adobe, Comcast, or any Fortune 500 company, you've encountered Workday. It is the most widely used Applicant Tracking System (ATS) in the world. It is also the most hated by job seekers.
You upload a beautifully formatted PDF. You click next. And then you see it: Workday has scrambled your work history, put your email address in the "Job Title" field, and completely missed your last two roles. You are forced to spend 20 minutes manually retyping everything.
If the parser scrambled your info, that is exactly how it saved it in the database. When recruiters search for candidates in Workday, they search this parsed data. 1. The Workday Parser Cannot Read Multi-Column Layouts
Many modern resume templates use a two-column layout: experience on the left, skills and contact info on the right. This looks great to a human. But the Workday parser reads text left-to-right across the entire page.
When it hits a two-column section, it merges the lines. "Senior React Developer" in column one gets combined with "Skills: Python, SQL" in column two. The parser sees "Senior React Developer Skills: Python, SQL" as a single jumbled job title. The parser gets confused, gives up, and leaves fields blank.
The Fix: Use a strict, single-column top-to-bottom layout. No sidebars, no tables, and no columns.
2. Avoid Tables and Text Boxes
Many candidates use tables to organize their skills section or list their education. Workday's parser strips tables. Often, it reads all the text inside a table, but strips the boundaries, resulting in one long, unpunctuated string. Sometimes, it ignores text inside tables and text boxes entirely.
The Fix: List your skills as a simple, comma-separated list under clear headings, like this:
Languages: JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, SQL Frameworks: React, Next.js, Node.js, Express
3. Use Standard, Plain Text Section Headers
Workday uses machine learning models to identify sections like "Work Experience," "Education," and "Skills." If you get creative with your section headers (e.g., "My Professional Journey" instead of "Work Experience"), Workday won't recognize it. It will dump your experience into the wrong sections or ignore it entirely.

4. Format Your Dates Exactly as Workday Expects
Workday is highly sensitive to date formats. If it can't parse your dates, it cannot calculate your total years of experience, which is a major ranking factor for recruiters. Formats like "09/'22" or "2022 - 2024" often fail or get parsed as single years.
The Fix: Use the most widely supported date format: MM/YYYY or Month YYYY (e.g., 05/2022 – Present or May 2022 – Present). Ensure you use a standard dash (not a special graphical character) between dates.
5. Mirror the Job Description Keywords Exactly
Workday uses a keyword matching index. When recruiters post a job, they specify search terms. If they search for "React", and you wrote "ReactJS" or "React.js", the match score might be lower depending on how old the Workday version is (many enterprise companies run outdated versions).
The Fix: Look at the job description. If it writes "TypeScript", write "TypeScript" on your resume, not "TS". Spell out acronyms at least once: "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)".
